Differences in interface

Probably the most decisive difference between the Crucial P5 and the Crucial P5 Plus is found in the interface used. The slightly older Crucial P5 without Plus communicates via the PCI Express interface of the third generation. The Crucial P5 with Plus, on the other hand, is connected to the system via the PCIe in the most modern fourth development stage. Of course, the connections are compatible with each other and downwards, although with the restrictions in maximum performance.

Comparison of power and performance

Due to the different interfaces, there are partly big differences in performance between the Crucial P5 Plus and the Crucial P5. In sequential reads, the former achieves up to 6,600 MB/s compared to the 3,400 MB/s of the latter. Crucial’s SSD with the “Plus” is also clearly ahead in sequential writes with a maximum of 5,000 MB/s compared to 3,400 MB/s of the older drive. The manufacturer uses 3-bit TLC in both series and relies on SLC caching for write performance acceleration.

Common features and warranty

The two series are offered up to a storage size of 2 TB (2,000 GB), whereby the Crucial P5 already starts at a capacity of 250 GB and the Crucial P5 Plus only at 500 GB. The warranty period is 5 years in each case with the same high TWB values. The external dimensions of the two NVMe drives correspond to the M.2 2280 standard. The Crucial P5 Plus and Crucial P5 come with a free version of cloning software for easy data transfer from an old drive, in addition to the SSD drive itself.

Conclusion SSD comparison – Crucial P5 and Crucial P5 Plus differences

The Crucial P5 and Crucial P5 Plus are not direct competitors, rather they complement each other in the manufacturer’s portfolio. The SSD series with the “Plus” is significantly faster thanks to PCIe Gen 4.0, but it is also noticeably more expensive to purchase with the same capacity than the SSD model without the “Plus”. It should also be noted that the Crucial P5 delivers a very good performance for NVMe drives at a relatively low price per gigabyte, and the Crucial P5 Plus can only show its performance advantage on a corresponding base. So, whether the higher speeds of the Crucial P5 Plus or the lower costs of the Crucial P5 are more important remains an individual matter.
