WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD vs WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD – Comparison, Differences, Pros and Cons

Looking at the technical specifications of the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD and the WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD, the reason for the latter’s raison d’être is not necessarily obvious at first due to the many similarities. Can the SN750 SE from spring 2021 possibly show significant advantages in a comparison with the SN750 from winter 2019 and convince us in a pending purchase decision?

Differences in interface and connectivity

The biggest difference between the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD and the WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD can be found in the configuration of the PCI Express interface used. While the previous generation still communicates via the PCIe 3.0 interface, Western Digital relies on the currently most modern connection in the form of PCIe 4.0 for the newer SSD series. In both cases, the drives are controlled at the connection via the four tracks.

Comparison of power and performance

Even though the fresher interface theoretically makes a doubling of the transfer rate possible, the WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD cannot work out a clear advantage for itself compared to the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD. The sequential read rate is 3,600 MB/s compared to 3,470 MB/s, and Western Digital’s older SSD series is always ahead in sequential write with a maximum of 3,000 MB/s to 2,830 MB/s even across all available storage sizes.

Differences in equipment and capacity

The WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD is available in storage sizes between 250 GB and 2,000 GB (2 TB). The variety of capacities starts the same for the WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD, but ends at 1,000 GB (1 TB). In addition, the predecessor model is available with a pre-mounted heat sink on request, which, however, increases the height of the M.2 2280 SSD to a bit more than 8 millimeters. In terms of the 5-year warranty and the high TBW values, the SN750 and the SN750 SE are the same.

Conclusion SSD comparison – WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD and WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD differences

From a comparison, you can’t figure out the role of the WD Black SN750 SE NVMe SSD as the successor generation for the WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD. Although the manufacturer uses a more up-to-date interface, it does not emphasize its advantages in terms of maximum possible performance at all. Since the older SN750 without SE offers a similar and partly better performance with the same warranty conditions, optionally comes with a cooler and also costs less money, it is clearly the better choice. The SN750 with SE can only become more attractive compared to the predecessor SSD due to the decreasing availability and prices over time.
