The focus of Western Digital’s storage solutions with the “Green” designation is on the lowest possible power consumption and thus low energy consumption as well as economical operation. The WD Green SATA SSD is also supposed to help achieve a longer battery life in laptops, for example, due to a more moderate power requirement. Formats and interface
The WD Green SATA SSD is offered in two form factors. The 2.5-inch version should primarily find its place in desktop computers, but thanks to the construction height of 7 millimeters, it is also suitable for notebooks with the corresponding installation slot. The outer dimensions of the more compact M.2 version correspond to the 2280 standard with a thickness of only 1.5 millimeters. Regardless of the format, Western Digital’s SSD communicates via the SATA III interface.
Capacity and flash memory type
The selection of storage sizes for the WD Green SATA SSD starts at the beginner-friendly capacity of 120 GB. At most, the 2.5-inch drive holds space for 2 TB of data, which can accommodate larger archives. The M.2 card, on the other hand, is available with a maximum of 480 GB. The manufacturer, Western Digital, relies on a two-dimensional TLC flash memory for the Green SATA SSD series, which can hold up to 3 bits and has a theoretical lifespan of 1.0 million hours.
Performance and warranty
In sequential read, the WD Green SATA SSD achieves up to 545 MB/s, which is considered perfectly reasonable for a drive in this class. However, Western Digital does not explicitly state the sequential write performance, but SLC caching is used for the performance increase. The warranty period of the WD Green SATA SSD is 3 years without a manufacturer-side restriction on the amount of data written to the drive.
Test report conclusion – WD Green SATA SSD in test
The WD Green SATA SSD is a pretty solid product with a perfectly adequate data transfer rate for drives with the SATA III interface for everyday computing. It is disappointing that the manufacturer does not provide exact values for the write speed. On the other hand, the offered three-year manufacturer’s warranty without TBW limits is okay. In addition, the smallest version with only 120 GB as a low-priced upgrade option for the thrifty customer should be noted as positive.
